Pick Up a Page. Slow Down. See What Happens
As President of the South Texas Art Therapy Association, much of my work has focused on advocating for state licensure and helping others understand what truly makes art therapy unique. Through conversations with legislators, clinicians, and the public, one thing has become clear: there’s a real gap in understanding how art therapy works and why it requires specialized training. At the same time, many counselors have shared a desire to use art therapy in their work—often encountering confusing or misleading information along the way. That gap is what inspired me to create a more accessible way for people to experience art therapy for themselves.
After ten years working as an Art Therapist in an acute mental health hospital, I began developing simple, structured art therapy coloring sheets designed to guide participation with clarity and intention. These templates help individuals know where to begin, support clinicians in understanding art therapy’s unique approach, and offer clear signals for when a referral to an Art Therapist may be helpful.
The directives included in The Art Therapy Guide to Coping Skills were originally created for inpatient psychiatric settings, where emotional overwhelm is common and communication needs to be clear, calming, and supportive. Each coloring page invites gentle focus, mindfulness, and self-care—using art materials in a way that feels safe, approachable, and meaningful.
You don’t need to be “artistic” to engage with these pages. Simply showing up and coloring with intention can create a soothing space to slow down, let go of perfectionism, and reconnect with your creative energy. Feedback from participants has shown that these directives help reduce anxiety, build confidence, and open the door to deeper self-awareness—one page at a time.
Whether you’re a clinician, educator, or someone looking for a calming way to support your mental health, these coloring sheets offer an invitation: pause, explore, and experience what art therapy can feel like.
